WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP) today announced the release of Guidance on Mass Balance Attribution for Advanced Recycled Automotive Plastics, a new voluntary resource intended to support greater consistency in understanding and communicating mass balance approaches across the automotive value chain.

Developed through SP’s Sustainable Materials Work Group, the guidance responds to growing interest in advanced recycling and the use of mass balance attribution to support recycled feedstock claims. The document provides a practical, high-level framework based on terminology and chain-of-custody models established in international standards.

“As companies work to increase the use of sustainable materials in automotive applications, there is value in developing a common understanding of the terminology and approaches used across the value chain,” said Kellen Mahoney, executive director of Suppliers Partnership for the Environment. “This guidance is intended to provide a practical reference to support clearer communication, greater consistency and improved data quality as companies evaluate the potential role of mass balance for advanced recycled plastics.”

The guidance outlines general principles for mass balance attribution, business-to-business information exchange and guardrails for communicating associated claims. It emphasizes that mass balance-attributed advanced recycled feedstock and mechanically recycled content are distinct approaches and should be communicated clearly and accurately.
