QUINCY, MA – August 24, 2026 – PRESSADVANTAGE –
South Shore Home Remodel has introduced a dedicated in-law suite and extra bedroom addition service for homeowners across the South Shore of Massachusetts, giving families a defined process for creating private living quarters for aging parents, returning adult children, and long-term guests without relocating. The Quincy-based contractor built the service around a documented rise in multigenerational living and a growing preference among older residents to remain in their own homes and communities.
The service covers full in-law suites that can include separate entrances, private kitchens, private bathrooms, and accessibility features, alongside guest room additions, standalone extra bedrooms, and the combining of smaller rooms into larger suites. Each project moves through planning, design, permitting, and construction under one contractor, with structural, plumbing, and electrical work coordinated by the company’s licensed team rather than divided across separate trades hired by the homeowner.
The timing reflects broad demographic shifts. Pew Research Center analysis of census data found that the number of people living in multigenerational family households reached 59.7 million in March 2021, roughly 18 percent of the United States population and about four times the total recorded in 1971. Among adults ages 25 to 34, one in four lived in a multigenerational household in 2021, compared with 9 percent five decades earlier, with financial pressure and family caregiving among the reasons cited most often.
Demand is also being shaped by older homeowners. AARP’s 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey of more than 3,000 adults reported that 75 percent of those age 50 and older want to stay in their current homes as they age, and 73 percent want to remain in their communities. More than half said they will need a residence that supports independent aging, a category that includes the ground-floor suites and accessible entrances common to in-law additions.
A recent change in state law has added to the relevance of the service. The Affordable Homes Act, signed by Governor Maura Healey in August 2024 and effective February 2, 2025, allows accessory dwelling units, a category that includes many in-law suites, to be built by right in single-family zoning districts across Massachusetts. The measure removes the special-permit requirement that many communities once applied and caps qualifying units at 900 square feet or half the floor area of the main home, whichever is smaller. State housing officials estimated the change could support 8,000 to 10,000 new units over five years.
Project scope and cost vary with size and complexity. According to figures published by the company, most in-law suite and bedroom addition projects run six to twelve weeks from planning to completion, with typical budgets between $10,000 and $30,000 depending on materials, layout, and the extent of structural, plumbing, or electrical work. Many additions avoid expanding a home’s footprint by converting a basement, finishing an attic, building above a garage, or extending upward with a second story.
“The priority for most families is keeping a parent or an adult child close while still protecting everyone’s privacy,” said Bob Dougherty, owner of South Shore Home Remodel. “Handling design, permitting, and construction under a single contractor keeps the timeline predictable and takes much of the guesswork out of an addition of this size.”
Permitting is managed as part of the standard process, with the company preparing applications and confirming that each addition meets local building codes, a step that carries added weight when plumbing, electrical systems, or load-bearing changes are involved. The service is available across the firm’s South Shore coverage area, which spans Quincy and more than two dozen surrounding communities, and draws on more than a decade of residential remodeling work in the region.
Dougherty said interest in the additions has extended beyond traditional elder-care arrangements to households seeking flexible space that can serve as a guest room, a home office, or independent quarters as family needs change over time. That versatility, he noted, allows a single addition to hold its usefulness and its contribution to property value well after the original reason for building it has passed.
