Hydrochloric acid is widely recognized for its ability to degrade common metals, including high-grade 304 and 316 stainless steel, which are frequently specified in industrial gauge construction. When metal components come into prolonged contact with HCl, the resulting corrosion can compromise gauge accuracy, cause leaks, and in some cases release hydrogen gas as a byproduct of the acid-metal reaction.
