New analysis finds CFPB credit reporting complaints rose from 283,716 in 2020 to 4,810,498 in 2025, with mistaken identity now the largest category.
CHICAGO, IL, UNITED STATES, August 6, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Credit reporting complaints filed with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau climbed from 283,716 in 2020 to 4,810,498 in 2025, according to a new analysis of federal complaint records published by Credit Booster AI.
The analysis found that the largest single category was consumers reporting that information on their credit report belonged to someone else. Nearly 1.92 million such complaints were filed in 2025, roughly 40 percent of all credit reporting complaints and the largest category by a wide margin.
The review also found that almost the entire increase over the period arrived through online complaint forms rather than by telephone.
Errors of this kind, mixed files, accounts opened through identity theft, and outdated negative marks, can lower a credit score and raise the cost of a mortgage, auto loan, or credit card for consumers who did nothing wrong. The scale of the 2025 figures points to a growing gap between how much credit data is collected and how accurately it is maintained.
A newer category of software has emerged in response. AI credit applications scan a consumer’s three-bureau report, flag likely inaccuracies, and generate the documentation needed to challenge them. Credit Booster AI is one such application, offering AI-driven report analysis and predictive score guidance.
“The data shows that most credit damage today comes from mistakes that were never the consumer’s fault,” said Alexander Katsman, founder and chief executive of Credit Booster AI. “We built the app to find those errors fast and give people a clear, honest path to fix them, without the high fees of a traditional repair company.”
The full analysis, broken down by year, state, and credit bureau, is available on the company’s research pages.
